Start after RSVPs, not before

Wait until your RSVPs are mostly in (about 2–3 weeks before the wedding). Seating before you know who is coming means redoing it. Lock the final headcount first.

Know your table math

• Round tables seat 8–10 guests (10 is comfortable for a 60-inch round).
• Long banquet tables seat about 1 guest per 2 feet, both sides.
• Divide your confirmed count by seats-per-table to get the number of tables you need — then confirm it fits the floor plan with your venue.

A simple placement method

1. Group first. Sort guests into natural groups (your side, their side, college friends, work, family).
2. Anchor each table with one group, then fill empty seats with compatible guests.
3. Seat the couple and close family first (head table or a sweetheart table), then work outward.
4. Handle the tricky few last — the guests who can sit anywhere are your flexibility.
